How to Sand and Paint a Black PLA Helmet Kit

A black PLA helmet kit is a starting point for a finishing project. Visible print lines are normal on an unfinished 3D print, and the final appearance depends on the preparation and paint process you choose.
1. Inspect and dry-fit
Review every printed piece before sanding. Dry-fit parts so you understand how they align, but do not permanently assemble them until you know which areas are easier to finish separately.
2. Sand gradually
Begin with a coarser grit appropriate for the print surface, then move through finer grits. Use light pressure and avoid concentrating heat in one spot. Wear suitable eye and respiratory protection and work in a ventilated area.
3. Fill and prime
Use a filler suitable for your materials and follow its label instructions. After it cures, sand the area smooth. Apply compatible primer in light coats. Primer makes remaining surface lines easier to see, so expect to repeat the fill, sand and prime cycle.
4. Paint in light coats
Confirm that your primer, paint and clear coat are compatible. Test products on scrap material when possible. Several light coats generally provide more control than one heavy coat. Allow the manufacturer-recommended drying time between coats.
5. Assemble carefully
Complete final assembly only after painted pieces have cured. Use adhesives and hardware suitable for the kit and follow the individual product listing for included parts.
