How to Finish a 3D-Printed DIY Helmet Kit

A DIY helmet kit gives you the printed base for a custom cosplay or display project. The exact components vary by design, so always review the individual product listing before ordering.
What a raw kit means
Raw FDM prints normally show visible layer lines and may require sanding, filling, priming, painting and assembly. Many Bluesprints3D helmet kits are Printed in Black PLA and can be sized to fit your head, but the listing is the final source for the material, color and included pieces.
Recommended finishing workflow
- Inspect and test fit: Check the printed pieces and carefully test how they align before sanding or gluing.
- Sand: Begin with a coarser grit to reduce layer lines, then progress to finer grits for a smoother surface.
- Fill: Apply a suitable filler to seams or deeper print lines and allow it to cure fully.
- Prime: Use filler primer in light coats. Sand between coats as needed.
- Paint: Apply thin, even coats and follow the paint manufacturer’s drying instructions.
- Assemble: Install the visor, magnets, padding or other hardware only when those components are appropriate for your specific helmet.

- Do not assume that a visor, magnets, padding, electronics or straps are included unless the listing says so.
- Heat can soften or deform PLA. Avoid leaving a helmet in a hot vehicle or near a strong heat source.
- These helmets are fan-made cosplay and display pieces, not certified protective safety equipment.
- Wear respiratory and eye protection appropriate for sanding, priming and painting.
